Ahead of the 2025 season, we are writing to inform you of updates to Rugby Australia’s ‘Concussion Management Procedure’ (CMP), in consideration of the release of the Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) ‘Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport’, and updates to World Rugby’s (WR) ‘Concussion Guidance’.
Notably, the minimum return to play periods for children and adolescents (aged 18 and under) has been extended from 19 days to 21 days in line with ASC and WR recommendations.
Despite the extension, a player who is suspected of having sustained a concussion and successfully completed the Graduated Return to Play program will still miss a minimum of two matches, as per the previous policy.
Return to play periods for adults will remain at 12 days.
This decision has been informed by evidence, including the analysis and evaluated findings of six-years of Blue Card (concussion) data, and ensures best-practice management of concussion within community levels of the game in Australia. In addition to these findings, consideration has been given to:
Competition structures and scheduling.
Consistency in the management of concussion in club and school competitions.
Addressing known and perceived risks of underreporting of concussion within community levels of the game.
Promoting safe training and playing environments for children and adolescents.
Ensuring adherence to the appropriate care and management of concussion among all players.
A summary of all updates to the CMP including strengthening the responsibilities of members in the recognition and management of concussion, extending the mandatory symptom-free period for children, adolescents and adults, and clarifying the step-by-step procedure in returning to learning, contact training, and playing, is available on Rugby Australia's Concussion Management webpage.
